Veteran Nigerian singer and guitarist GT Da Guitarman has said the formula for succeeding in the music industry has changed over the years, urging aspiring artistes to embrace new realities and leverage digital tools to build their careers.
Speaking during an interview on Conversations with Kenni, GT Da Guitarman said today’s artistes require a different approach to achieve success compared to previous generations.
“What is required to succeed as an artiste in 2026 is not the same thing required back in the day.A lot of artistes need to rewire their minds to understand that their phone now commands a lot of authority.”
Reflecting on his early years in the industry, GT Da Guitarman recalled sharing a record label with some of Nigeria’s most celebrated music stars, describing the experience as a privilege.
“Being signed on the same label with people like Darey Art Alade, Jazzman Olofin, Sasha P, Ikechukwu, Naeto C and General Pype, I can talk about all of them and it won’t be enough. These are really amazing guys.”
Comparing the industry’s past and present, the singer maintained that technological advancements have made it easier for musicians to create, distribute and promote their work.
“I think it’s easier to do music today than it was back then.”
GT Da Guitarman also advised young Nigerians to take responsibility for improving their financial situations instead of attributing every challenge to poor governance.
“I always console myself with the fact that even in the days of Jesus there were poor people. If you find yourself poor in 2026, do something about that. Let’s stop blaming the government.”
