Veteran Nollywood actress Iretiola Doyle has revealed how a piece of advice from the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe helped shape her career and changed her approach to acting.
Doyle shared the experience while appearing as a guest on The Old And New Show, where she reflected on her journey in Nollywood, versatility as an actor, and lessons she has learnt throughout her career.
The actress recalled how she moved from playing Clare the lawyer in Solitaire, where she acted alongside veteran actor RMD, to taking on the comedic role of Sisi, Poli Caro’s fourth wife, in the popular sitcom Fuji House of Commotion.
According to Doyle, she initially questioned whether she could successfully transition from intense dramatic roles to comedy, but Amaka Igwe’s response gave her a new perspective on the craft.
“She didn’t say much. She just shrugged, looked down at her mobile phone, and said to me, ‘A consummate actor is one who is able to run the entire gamut, from hardcore strong characters all the way down to slapsticks. Maybe you lack range.’”
Doyle admitted that the statement challenged her confidence but ultimately pushed her to embrace the opportunity.
“Of course, my artistic ego was pricked. I took the role, and it made me a household name quicker than I thought it would,” she said.
The actress explained that the experience taught her that a true performer must be able to adapt to different genres and character types.
Doyle also praised filmmaker and comedian AY Makun for his treatment of cast and crew, describing him as one of her favourite producers because of the value he places on human capital.
“Working for and with AY, he is one of my favourite producers because he places a premium on his human capital. That is where a lot of producers get it wrong. You cannot treat your human capital as if they are disposable,” she said.
She added that producers must understand the importance of investing in their teams because the success of a production depends on the people involved.
“When I say human capital, I am talking about cast and crew. If you look after the people, the rest is easy,” Doyle said.
