Donald Trump’s latest attempt to delay payment of a $5.8m judgment for defaming a magazine columnist whom a jury determined he sexually abused has been emphatically rejected by a federal court judge. In a single-sentence 4 July order, US district Judge Lewis Kaplan denied the president’s request for more time to pay the civil judgment owed to E Jean Carroll, who was awarded the damages after a New York jury concluded that Trump sexually abused her in 1996 – then defamed her after she publicly described the attack in 2019.Trump’s move came days after the US supreme court, without explanation or…

Ministers have been urged to toughen the City regulator’s powers to protect consumers against the potential risks of AI, according to a landmark review. The Mills review by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which looked at how AI will reshape financial services from 2030 onward, found that companies are already starting to shift from human-led activities towards AI-enabled services for everyday consumers. It found the move could support customers and make financial advice more accessible to lower-income households, but it also increased the risk of fraud, cyber threats and harm to consumers.“AI is likely to become a defining force in retail financial…

Nigeria’s evolving security partnership with the United States is no longer defined by troop presence but by something less visible—and potentially more consequential: intelligence, information, and global integration. While recent headlines have focused on the partial withdrawal of US troops, Thursday’s remarks by the Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM), Dagvin Anderson, reveal a deeper shift—one in which Nigeria is emerging as both a proving ground and a strategic node in a new model of counterterrorism and transnational security cooperation. Mr Anderson was speaking to journalists at a post-conference briefing following the African Chiefs of Defence (ACHOD) conference held in Luanda, Angola, between 30…

Despite the worst efforts of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, an embarrassing figure who pals around with Putin, flies across the world on a jet provided by Qatar (just like Trump!), gifted Trump a “FIFA Peace Prize” for reasons unknown, and is reported to have rescinded a red card against the U.S. under pressure from Trump, the 2026 World Cup has thus far been a smashing success, owing to its North American setting, megawatt star power (Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, Haaland, etc.) and the most promising U.S. squad in quite some time. Heck, the U.S. men’s national team’s win over Bosnia and…

This story was originally reported by Nadra Nittle of The 19th. New student loan rules took effect Wednesday — and the changes may heavily impact women pursuing higher education, particularly those in graduate programs like social work. Critics warn that the new guidelines, ushered in by the Trump administration’s sweeping tax-and-spending bill known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” will worsen gender, racial and class inequities. Graduate students used to be able to borrow up to the full cost of tuition over the course of their degree programs. Facing lower borrowing limits, women pursuing caregiving and other professions where…
