By Peter Egwuatu & Chukwunonso Okolo The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has directed operators in Nigeria’s capital market to immediately identify and freeze funds, assets and other economic resources linked to a Nigerian citizen and three Nigerian companies sanctioned by the United States Government for allegedly facilitating financial transactions connected to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and ISIS-West Africa. The directive, contained in a circular titled ‘Notice of Sanction’ posted on the commission’s website, requires all Capital Market Regulated Entities (CMREs) to freeze the assets of the designated individual and entities without prior notice and report the action…
I didn’t want to work in social media. If you’d asked 15-year-old me my dream job, I might have said foreign correspondent, or maybe travel writer. So you can imagine my surprise to now find myself giving these very colleagues advice on how to get the best selfie angle or write the sharpest TikTok ‘hook’.But taking a job as the Guardian’s deputy editor of social platforms, may prove to be one of my smartest career moves if the current job market is to be believed. You don’t need to be a digital native to have noticed the way that celebrities, brands…
Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may already be influencing human biology. New research has identified long-term changes in blood chemistry that appear to track rising atmospheric CO2, raising concerns that an important blood marker could approach the upper end of its healthy range within the next several decades. The findings may be particularly important for children and teenagers. Because their bodies are still developing, younger generations are expected to experience the greatest lifetime exposure to elevated atmospheric CO2. Decades of Blood Data Reveal a Shift In a study published in Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health, scientists from…

By Jimoh Babatunde Founder of the Initiative for Peace, Forgiveness and Love for One Another (IPFLOA), Ambassador Kingsley Atoe, has appealed to Nigerian music stars, Peter and Paul Okoye of the defunct P-Square duo, to forgive one another and reconcile their differences. The appeal comes amid renewed attention to the prolonged disagreement between the Okoye twins. The brothers, who reunited in 2021 after their earlier split, fell out again in 2024…
Jessica was at a spa with her friends of more than 20 years when she noticed one stare at her bikini, lock eyes with her and laugh, before asking: “Wait, have you …?” The game was up – eight months after she’d had a secret breast enhancement, she’d been rumbled. Fearing judgment from even her closest circle, she had only spoken to two people who’d had the procedure, for advice, and told a neighbour in case she was unwell after the surgery. “My family still don’t know – most people don’t,” the 42-year-old from London says, including her two children who…

Google began offering third-party app store downloads in the Play Store earlier this week, but US District Judge James Donato says the company isn’t doing enough. After reviewing the process for accessing the first non-Google store, Donato ruled that Google has added unnecessary “anticompetitive friction,” ordering the company to rectify the issues. While Epic and Google are patching things up with a global partnership agreement, the two are still on opposite sides of the antitrust case in the US. Google lost the case in 2023, and the intervening years have been about determining how to implement remedies to address Google’s…
