A woman holds a “legalize cannabis now” sign outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Bill Clark | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty ImagesMarijuana has had a history of highs and lows in the U.S. over the past century — legally, politically and culturally — teetering between vilification and acceptance. Since 1996, 40 states and the District of Columbia have legalized either medical or recreational adult-use marijuana. Yet cannabis, the leafy plant from which marijuana is derived, is still a federally illegal Schedule I drug as defined by the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. With November’s pivotal midterm elections…
I’m at the research and development centre of the world’s biggest publicly listed ice-cream maker, Magnum. Near Bedford in the UK, it’s where the company’s researchers dream up new recipes and develop their production processes. What really catches my eye is a pale yellow glow in the corner of the room. The light emanates from a glow-in-the-dark ice lolly.Launched in the clubbing capital of Ibiza, it’s targeted toward clubbers and festival-goers, and one of its ingredients, vitamin B2, is naturally luminescent and glows under UV club lights. While a luminescent product may seem a bit of a gimmick, ice cream is a…
Wildfires are an increasing problem in Europe and elsewhere. While their immediate effect on air quality is obvious, they can also trigger less visible but significant environmental effects, including algal blooms. An algal bloom is the rapid growth of algae and other plant-like microorganisms. These blooms can become so dense that they change the colour of the lake and seas. Although most are harmless, some produce dangerous toxins. When their blooms die, their decomposition depletes oxygen in the water, creating so-called dead zones.Algal blooms are often fuelled by excess nutrients from human activities, such as fertiliser runoff and sewage dumping. But…
