During a recent lunch break, Jill Sennett saw something so unappetizing she had to share it with her 26,000 X followers: Artificial intelligence-generated menu images from a Jamaican barbecue pop-up restaurant in which the meats looked like leather belts crawling with tiny beetles. The images were reshared by more than 500 people who similarly expressed their disgust. Eating is “such an essential human experience”, said Sennett, a 37-year-old nurse in Denver. “I think it’s a bad cultural thing that restaurants are converting to these horrific, uncanny food images that are unappetizing.”Still, Sennett ordered chicken and macaroni and cheese. It was one…

Emma Okechukwu Political appointments are often announced in a single sentence. But the experiences that recommend individuals for consequential assignments are rarely accumulated overnight. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally constituted the campaign council on August 22, 2026, with Yari as Director-General.  The appointment immediately elevated the former Zamfara governor to one of the most important operational positions in the governing party’s re-election machinery. Yet, to assess the appointment only from the standpoint of…

The word “nothing” is spoken four times in four lines in the opening scene of King Lear, among 30 uses across the play. This feels the key to Titus Halder’s Sheffield Crucible staging, which really makes something of nothingness, crowned by an unusually age-appropriate performer as the “fourscore and upward” English king: 82-year-old Ian McDiarmid. The dark pit of Richard Kent’s design might be a nuclear after-blast. Like Peter Brook’s mid 20th-century stage and film versions, in a previous era of existentialist international tension, the interpretation radiates terminal uncertainty. Characters address pleas and prayers to “the gods” in the direction identified…

Uber’s withdrawal after 12 years has ignited a debate over Nigeria’s business environment, the vulnerability of foreign digital platforms and the opportunity for indigenous alternatives, writes Festus Akanbi For more than a decade, Uber was woven into the fabric of urban transportation in Nigeria. Its arrival in Lagos in 2014 introduced commuters to a different taxi experience: journeys could be ordered from a mobile telephone, fares estimated in advance, drivers tracked, and payments completed electronically. Before long, “Uber” became almost a generic expression for app-based transportation. That journey ended on September 2, 2026, when the global ride-hailing company discontinued operations in…
