South Norfolk MP Goldsborough criticised Sutton’s decision and said: “If Colin Sutton wants to be a celebrity that’s his choice, but Norfolk deserves a police and crime commissioner whose first priority is Norfolk.”Matthew Taylor, a Conservative county councillor who finished second in the PCC election, said he was “shocked” to learn of the former detective’s plans for a long run in theatres.”If there is a major incident, you would expect the police and crime commissioner to be there, front and centre,” he said. “Not operationally, that’s down to the chief constable, but in terms of lending his support, communicating with…
Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have demonstrated a new way to protect delicate quantum information using mechanical vibrations, essentially microscopic sound waves. The advance, developed in the lab of Marko Lončar, Tiantsai Lin Professor of Electrical Engineering, could support the development of compact quantum networks built directly onto chips. It may also help enable hybrid quantum systems that combine several different kinds of quantum bits, or qubits. The findings are published in Nature Physics. The experiments were led by Eliza Cornell, a recent Ph.D. graduate from the Lončar lab who is…
Bruno Guimaraes scored a stunning goal two minutes after David Raya had saved a penalty as Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 to move above Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. The Black Cats had the chance to go in front when Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard in the second half but Raya brilliantly tipped Enzo Le Fee’s spot kick onto the post. Just 121 seconds later, Guimaraes, whose every touch had been booed by the home fans due to his Newcastle connections, crashed a stunning strike in off the underside of the crossbar from outside the…
At this late date, what the Pretenders accomplished is no mystery achievement. But it’s also a story that has never been extensively chronicled on film until “The Pretenders,” a Joss Crowley-directed doc that premieres Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The band released what might rightly be considered the best rock ‘n’ roll debut album of all time in Janauary 1980, and Crowley’s film covers the lead-up to that — Chrissie Hynde looking and acting like a biker chick in late ’70s Akron before moving to and finding her real gang in the U.K. — and the tumultuous few…
An Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has given the state government three months to “assess and pay adequate compensation” for taking over a private school or return it to its original owners. Justice A. Archibong gave the order in a judgement delivered on 14 July 2026. The case was instituted on 8 August 2022 by five children, including Samuel Ebong, who sued as children and beneficiaries of the estate of late John Ebong, whose school, Christian Secondary School, Afia Etoi, was taken over by the then Cross River State Government in 1977. Akwa Ibom State Government inherited the…
Sometimes, the future of a nation does not arrive with the noise of a grand ceremony. It announces itself quietly—in a classroom, on a football field, inside a workshop, behind a computer screen or on the pages of a child’s sketchbook. And sometimes, all that future needs is for someone to notice. The tragedy is not always that talent is absent. More often, it is that talent exists but remains unseen, unsupported and eventually extinguished by circumstances. This is why the story of 12-year-old Ogun State artist, Master Morenikeji Ebunoluwa Joshua, deserves more than passing applause. It deserves to be…
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed the readiness of Gateway Air, the state-owned airline, to airlift not only Ogun pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Hajj, but also intending pilgrims from other South-West states. The governor said Ogun would explore opportunities to participate in the emerging private-sector-driven Hajj airlift arrangement, particularly for pilgrims from Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states. Abiodun disclosed this on Friday when he received a delegation of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), led by its Commissioner of Operations, Anofiu Elegushi, at his office. The governor said the state government had…

While OpenAI has filed confidentially for an IPO, the company will not be going public this year, according to CEO Sam Altman. Altman was interviewed recently by Fortune editor in chief Alyson Shontell; amidst the fallout from the OpenAI-HuggingFace hack, as well as broader discussions about AI safety, Shontell asked whether OpenAI still feels pressure to “move really fast” due to its IPO plans. “We’re not rushing into an IPO,” Altman said. “I actually think that given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.” Instead, he insisted that OpenAI will go public “when…
So why have fewer MPs backed it, compared to a year ago? There are a number of reasons why support for assisted dying has dropped off. Some MPs have changed their mind. Janet Daby, the Labour MP for Lewisham East, for example told the Commons that after she previously backed the bill “my conscience was not at peace, and I cannot again, in good conscience, vote for the bill.”But in reality those switching their position are a small minority. For others, the influence of Andy Burnham may have been a factor. When MPs last gave their collective view on assisted dying, Sir Keir…
