The Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector facility in JapanThe Asahi Shimbun via Getty Images The standard model of particle physics may be due for a philosophical remodel, including rethinking what qualifies each of its particles to count as a particle to begin with. Whether a particle is involved in making up matter or carrying a force, it or its constituent parts has a place in the standard model of particle physics. In this way, the standard model is similar to the periodic table of elements – it tabulates the building blocks of our world. But George Hobart at the University of Bristol…

By Tim Akano AfriExit is no longer theory. It is happening in South Africa as I write — and the continent is watching. Ghana has summoned South Africa’s high commissioner. Nigeria has evacuated citizens. The African Union is being asked to debate what one government has called xenophobic attacks against African nationals. This is no longer a domestic squabble over jobs and services — it is a continental credibility crisis, and it is unfolding in real time. South Africa today is a Partial Differential Equation (PDE — mathematical equations so difficult to solve, but nonetheless solvable by math geniuses) with…

A long-running debate about a mysterious crater hidden beneath the North Sea has finally been settled. Researchers have confirmed that the Silverpit Crater was created when an asteroid or comet slammed into the region roughly 43 to 46 million years ago. The finding resolves a scientific argument that has lasted for more than two decades and identifies Silverpit as one of Earth’s relatively rare impact craters, geological scars left behind when space rocks strike the planet at tremendous speeds. The research team, led by Dr. Uisdean Nicholson of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and funded by the Natural Environment Research Council…
