Most people who reach the top of Nigeria’s downstream energy sector arrive through trading. Adisa Aliu arrived through metallurgical and materials engineering, a background that shaped how he built Matrix Energy Group into one of the country’s most diversified indigenous energy conglomerates.
Aliu is the Founder and Group CEO, an engineer certified as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), the peak of professional recognition within Nigeria’s foremost engineering body. He also passed through banking and international oil firms before turning toward building his own institution.
Matrix today spans oil trading, shipping, logistics, LPG distribution, mining, and fertiliser blending. While most downstream peers focus narrowly on fuel retail and tank farms, Aliu pushed his operations across sectors and bºrders.
He built the first LPG terminal in Nigeria’s South-south region, located in Delta State, and later established a 6,000 metric tonne LPG terminal in Tema, Ghana, giving the company a regional infrastructure footprint that few Nigerian independents have matched.
During the period of fuel subsidy adjustments and price volatility, Matrix’s retail stations developed a quiet reputation for meter accuracy and fair pricing, a distinction that built consumer trust when the sector’s credibility was under pressure.
Aliu’s policy influence has grown to match his commercial footprint. He sits on Nigeria’s Presidential Economic Coordination Council, where he presents private sector perspectives on the national Gas Master Plan. It is a seat that positions him as more than a businessman navigating government; he is now a voice inside the room where energy policy is shaped.
His philanthropy runs along similarly institutional lines. The Aliu Foundation has funded more than 4,000 university scholarships and built kidney treatment facilities at hospitals in Maiduguri and Ile-Ife.
In mid-2026, Aliu secured interim court injunctions to protect Matrix’s trading operations as EFCC probes related to historic NNPC forward oil sales created sector-wide scrutiny. He moved proactively rather than reactively, which itself reflects the management style that has defined the company’s growth.
Matrix has made considerable noise in the market. The man running it has been largely quiet. In this sector, that combination tends to hold.
