For years, May Edochie lived outside the spotlight before divine providence lifted her out. A wife, a mother and a businesswoman building quietly.
Today, her name trends weekly. Her face sells brands. Her story inspires millions.
May’s journey from obscurity to stardom didn’t happen overnight. It was forged in pain, resilience, and a firm decision to reclaim her narrative.
Life before the spotlight
To many Nigerians, May was simply known as the wife of actor Yul Edochie. She built her life around family and business, far from social media noise and celebrity culture.
Those close to her describe her as hardworking, grounded, and intentional. The public barely knew her name.
That changed in April 2022, when Yul Edochie publicly acknowledged actress Judy Austin as his second wife. He cited the impact she had made on his life.
Overnight, May was thrust into national conversation.
She responded with clarity: “You can have Judy and let me have my freedom.”
Turning pain into purpose
The moment could have broken her. Instead, May stepped forward and refused to be defined by scandal
.
She spoke with grace and drew a clear line: “I will not be cajoled into accepting polygamy, which goes against my beliefs, faith, and values. I will not be numbered in a home that we started building with love, faith, tears, hopes, and prayers in a Catholic marriage of 18 years.”
A mother of three, she chose dignity over drama. The public response was immediate. Empathy turned into massive support from female celebrities, Edochie’s family and Nigerians.
Building the ‘Queen May’ brand
Stardom, for May, became more than fame. Indeed, it became a platform. She moved into brand influencing and ambassadorships, partnering with major companies in beauty, lifestyle, and consumer goods. Her calm, relatable presence made her a marketer’s dream: authentic, trusted, and aspirational.
On social media, she built a community around a simple message: heal, grow, and glow. Her posts blend motherhood, self-care, faith, business, and quiet luxury.
Fans began calling her “Queen May” not just for the title, but for how she carried herself through fire and came out refined.
Today, she is also an entrepreneur and style icon. She is the founder of Queen May Beauty Cosmetics and has made her acting debut. She describes herself as a woman of substance and a muse of her own journey.”
Giving back
On Wednesday, September 16, May will launch another project under her foundation, May’s Oasis Foundation. The initiative, “Project Feed and Empower Her”, will feed about 1,000 children on the streets and provide basic skills and empowerment for underprivileged women.
“No one should be hungry,” she said.
For May, the work is about legacy. “Life is much more than we can behold with our eyes.”
The bigger picture
May’s rise resonates because it feels familiar. Many women know what it’s like to build in the background, to be overlooked, and to have life happen publicly.
May showed another path: don’t beg for respect, command it through work and character. Don’t fight for the narrative, own it.
From being known as “Yul’s wife” to becoming a brand, business owner, and advocate for self-worth, May Edochie has rewritten her story. When life tried to break her, she built a brand instead. And she’s still soaring.
