OPay has revealed the technology infrastructure powering its digital payment platform, saying years of investment in engineering, security and payment systems have enabled it to process millions of transactions daily with a 99.9 per cent success rate while positioning the company to serve one billion users globally.
The company disclosed this during its recent Media Parley in Lagos, where executives spoke with media stakeholders about the technology behind its financial services platform.
Rather than focusing on products, OPay said the session aimed to showcase the engineering systems that support digital payments for tens of millions of Nigerians.
Speaking at the event, OPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, Elizabeth Wang, said the company’s vision extends beyond building a payment application to creating an inclusive financial ecosystem powered by technology.
According to her, OPay aims to serve one billion users, support 10 million merchants and create one million jobs by making digital financial services safer, easier and more accessible.
“People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure and innovation.
“Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible.”
The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, said OPay’s engineering philosophy prioritises solving customer challenges, particularly failed transactions, delayed payment notifications and security concerns.
“We don’t begin with technology. We begin with the customer’s experience. Every failed transfer, delayed alert or security concern is treated as an engineering challenge. Where others accept these problems as normal, our teams work until the problem disappears from the customer’s experience,” Adekunle said.
He explained that OPay’s payment infrastructure is built with multiple layers of redundancy, including dedicated direct connections to payment switching partners, backup systems and automatic failover mechanisms that reroute transactions during disruptions without affecting customers.
According to the company, these investments have enabled 99.9 per cent of transactions to complete successfully, making digital payments reliable enough for millions of Nigerians.
On transaction speed, Adekunle said OPay redesigned its payment processing systems using dedicated direct-line connections and optimised processing pipelines, reducing the average transaction time to less than one second.
“Our job is to make technology almost invisible. Customers should never have to think about servers, networks or system architecture. They should know that when they press ‘Send’, their money gets there quickly, securely and reliably,” he said.
The company also highlighted its security architecture, explaining that it deploys risk-based protection that activates additional verification measures only when suspicious activity is detected.
According to OPay, its in-house Security Centre includes features such as Emergency Lock, Safety PIN, Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield and an AI-powered Anti-Scam Shield designed to safeguard customers while maintaining seamless transaction experiences.
“The best security is the one customers rarely notice because it appears only when risk changes. We designed our platform to protect customers without interrupting the speed and convenience they expect every day,” Adekunle added.
The company said its infrastructure operates continuously through thousands of APIs, multiple redundant processing paths, localised processing capabilities and artificial intelligence that supports fraud detection, risk management and operational efficiency. It added that software upgrades are deployed without scheduled downtime to ensure uninterrupted service.
Beyond payments, Wang said OPay remains committed to expanding financial inclusion and supporting education through initiatives such as its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year OPay Scholars Programme and National Innovation Challenge.
“We believe the true value of technology is measured not only by business success but by the positive impact it creates for society. Every innovation should make financial services more inclusive, strengthen trust and create opportunities for more people to participate in Nigeria’s digital economy,” she said.
