The quarter-final picture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is now complete, with defending champions Nigeria handed a blockbuster meeting with Cameroon in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most compelling last-eight ties.
The final quarter-finalists were confirmed on Thursday after Cameroon secured top spot in Group D with a 1-1 draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde in Casablanca.
The result ensured the Indomitable Lionesses finished the group stage unbeaten, collecting seven points from three matches after recording two victories and a draw.
That was enough to set up a mouthwatering clash with Nigeria, who progressed to the knockout rounds as Group C runners-up after recovering from a shock opening defeat to Malawi with victories over Zambia and Egypt.
For Cameroon, the quarter-final represents another significant test of their credentials. They have shown consistency throughout the group stage and will now face a Nigeria side determined to defend the continental crown it won at the previous edition.
The Super Falcons will also have history and experience on their side, but Cameroon’s unbeaten run means they will arrive at the quarter-final with plenty of confidence.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, bowed out of their maiden WAFCON campaign with a point to show for their efforts. The debutants secured their first-ever point at the continental finals with the draw against Cameroon, bringing a memorable first appearance to an end.
Four heavyweight quarter-finals, one prize beyond the trophy
The quarter-finals begin on Saturday, with four intriguing encounters spread across Casablanca and Rabat.
Côte d’Ivoire will face Algeria in Casablanca in the opening quarter-final before hosts Morocco take on defending runners-up South Africa in Rabat later in the evening.
The Ivorians have impressed on their return to the continental stage and finished top of Group B unbeaten, while Algeria will be looking to continue their impressive campaign against one of the tournament’s emerging forces.
The second fixture of the day could be equally explosive, with Morocco enjoying home advantage against South Africa.
The hosts will look to draw on the backing of their home crowd to overcome a Banyana Banyana side that secured their place in the knockout rounds with a strong finish to Group B.
Sunday brings the headline fixture, as Cameroon and Nigeria will meet in Casablanca, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals and taking another major step towards continental glory.
The other quarter-final will see Malawi face Ghana in Rabat.
Malawi have already produced one of the biggest shocks of the tournament by defeating Nigeria in their opening Group C fixture. However, Ghana will provide another major test as both sides chase a place in the final four.
World Cup qualification adds another layer
Beyond the battle for the WAFCON title, there is an even bigger prize at stake.
The four teams that win their quarter-final ties will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, and this makes the last-eight fixtures more than a straight fight for a place in the semi-finals.
For the four winners, victory will secure continental glory ambitions while also guaranteeing a place on football’s biggest global stage next year.
With Nigeria, Cameroon, Morocco, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Malawi and Ghana all still dreaming of the title, the knockout stage promises little room for error.
The race for the trophy has entered its decisive phase.
