Danny Welbeck scored his first goal for Chelsea as the Blues defeated third-tier Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.
The 35-year-old summer signing from Brighton headed Chelsea in front early in the second half before Hakeem Odoffin turned Estevao Willian’s effort into his own net to seal victory.
Chelsea followed up their 3-2 Premier League win at Fulham on Monday with another positive result in Xabi Alonso’s early reign, although they were made to work for their progress by a resilient Luton side.
Welbeck eventually broke the visitors’ resistance when he headed in Malo Gusto’s cross.
The former England international believes his experience can prove valuable to a Chelsea squad that has undergone significant changes in recent seasons.
“I bring the average age a little bit higher!” Welbeck said when asked what he brings to the squad.
“The experience of playing games, being around loads of different dressing rooms and knowing what is a good dressing room and a bad one. Knowing what it takes to achieve something special.”
Odoffin’s own goal ended Luton’s hopes of a comeback after another dangerous delivery from Estevao, sending Chelsea into the last 32, where they will host Leeds United.
Mike Penders started in goal for Chelsea after Robert Sanchez endured an error-strewn display against Fulham.
Alonso could soon have another experienced option available, with a deal to bring Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez from Aston Villa reportedly close to completion.
However, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was absent amid reports linking him with a move to Manchester City.
Alonso stressed the importance of having a squad that combines youth with experience as he attempts to build a competitive Chelsea team.
“We want to have a complete squad in all aspects. In quality, personality, young and experienced players, so the young players get help, so they are still players to develop,” Alonso said.
“I’m happy with the energy and attitude of the players.”
