The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has called for a major rebuilding of women’s football in Nigeria, beginning with renewed investment in grassroots development. Ms Omidiran made the call on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament at the Area 3 Sports Complex, Abuja. Her call followed the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, ending Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991. She said the setback should prompt stakeholders to…

Social media arrived just as I, a younger millennial, was on the brink of teenhood. My friends and I signed up for accounts on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, as well as less remembered sites such as the now defunct Bebo. We didn’t know what we were doing; no one did. We posted indiscreet messages and photos on public feeds that we wouldn’t want any future employer – or really anyone, for that matter – to see. Then gradually we, and our parents and their parents, too, learned what it means to live with that world-changing phenomenon that we term social…

I noticed Justine before she noticed me. We were at a literary award ceremony and she was wearing a dress, upcycled from a black Velvet Elvis painting, talking to a man three times her age.I asked my friend, Carol, who knew everyone, why I’d never seen her before. Carol explained that she was an Australian academic, researching the history of publishing, and led me across the room.“Justine,” Carol said. “You’re researching science fiction in New York. This is Scott, he’s a science fiction writer in New York.”Justine turned from the older man, glanced at me, then shook her head. “Not…

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Edo State governorship aspirant, Mr Ken Imansuagbon, has thrown his weight behind the presidential candidate of the party, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, over his pledge to restore petrol subsidy if elected in 2027, insisting that the policy reversal would provide immediate relief to millions of Nigerians battling economic hardship. Imansuagbon, in a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday in Benin City, described the  criticism that greeted Atiku’s position from the presidency and the ruling APC as “misplaced and politically motivated”. He argued that the removal of fuel subsidy by the…

The most important thing about QIH, though, is that it can be switched on and off at will. In Tanaka’s experiments the mice spent 48 hours in the hibernation-like state and then woke up. For their synapses, these 48 hours worked like Thanos’ snap. Synaptic purge To find out how many synapses are lost during QIH, Tanaka’s team implanted tetrodes, bundles of fine electrodes, into the hippocampus of freely moving mice. These let them record individual neurons firing. They found that activity dropped by about 70 percent once hibernation set in. The brain tissues of some animals were imaged with…

He said some had claimed bad weather was the biggest factor in a reduction of crossings this year.”But what that demonstrates is absolutely that the French are being effective in preventing a number of these small boats.””Clearly, every single day that one slips through the net and crosses, it’s one too many, and that’s why it’s absolutely critical to us to not take our foot off the gas and to keep working hard with our French partners and stop this from happening.”In the last week, 425 migrants made it across the Channel on five boats during three days of good…

It appears the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of world oil passed before the US–Iran war, was one of the most urgent tasks of humanity. The United States has, for six months, been unable to re-open this vital artery, which handled 100–140 commercial ships daily. Then, like magic, Oman and Iran reached a consensus to reopen the strait. Oman, a tiny country of 5.4 million people spread over a 309,500 square kilometre area, is one of the closest allies of the US. It was the first Arab nation in the Arabian Peninsula to sign a trade…
