American engineer and educator, Nathan Thomas broke a centuries-old record when he returned to his former college as a faculty member before his 19th birthday. When Nathan Thomas walked into a computer science classroom at Miami Dade College in August 2023, most of his students were roughly his own age. That wasn’t a coincidence — Thomas, born September 9, 2004, in the United States, was just 18 years and 346 days old, making him the youngest male professor in history. The milestone ended a run that had stood for more than three centuries. The previous record-holder, Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin,…
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has raised concern over the growing use of fake job offers and digital recruitment by criminal gangs to lure vulnerable people into human trafficking and online scam operations across West and Central Africa. The organisation said traffickers are increasingly adapting their methods, exploiting migration routes, labour markets and online platforms to recruit victims into forced labour, sexual exploitation and criminal activities, including internet scams. In a statement issued Tuesday in Dakar to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, themed “Trapped Behind the Scam,” IOM called for stronger regional cooperation and victim-centred…

Mr Faye unveiled his party, Kiiraay, also known as the Republican Patriots party, at a gathering in the capital, Dakar, last week. Kiiraay means “shield” in the local Wolof language. At the gathering on Saturday, the president described the party as “the majority party in this country.” Mr Faye and Mr Sonko were once the twin faces of Senegal’s anti-establishment movement. Mr Sonko also played a key role in Mr Faye’s election as president.…

The terrible sadness, tattiness and poisoned idealism of the old GDR is preserved as if in a time capsule in this East German film from 1980; it could be a kind of B-side to Bob Fosse’s Cabaret. The heroine, would-be solo pop singer Sunny, is told by her ungallant MC that she is no Liza Minnelli; Cabaret fans might well incidentally recognise here the brusque German word “bumsen”.Solo Sunny is the work of Konrad “Koni” Wolf, a director with an impressive and strange pedigree: he was a garlanded state-sanctioned artist in East Germany, much admired at the Berlin film festival,…

The recent uprising of the youth in India might seem to have subsided after forcing Dharmendra Pradhan, the education minister of India, to resign. Still, he was never the true target of this historic youth revolt. The slogans, the placards, the irreverent digital art and the collective anger of the young were directed at one man alone: Narendra Modi. There exists a pervasive prejudice among the intelligentsia that young Indians today are politically indifferent, consumerist and unconcerned with politics or the erosion of democratic norms. The events at Jantar Mantar have laid bare the shallowness of this assumption. The young harboured…
