Why does his death heavily cast a pall on the Nigerian media industry? It is not only because Dotun’s journalism career took him in turns to Newswatch, The PUNCH, The Sun, The Nigerian Tribune and The Compass, after which he established The Eagle Online. The incontestable testimony is that as he crossed through these media organisations, he left indelible impressions in the minds of those he encountered along the way. Today is Tuesday, exactly one week that death, like a night thief, sneaked in and snatched away my friend, Dotun Samson Oladipo. One week after, I seem to have some…
When Jigawa State was created on 27 August 1991, it began its existence with the basic challenge of building a state almost from scratch. Dutse, its designated capital, was then a modest rural settlement, while the new administration had limited infrastructure, public utilities, and institutional structures. Thirty-five years later, that picture has changed dramatically. Jigawa now has an established public administration, 27 local government areas, universities, an international airport, an expanding road network, and a growing portfolio of healthcare and public institutions. That transformation did not belong to any single administration. It was built progressively by military administrators, successive civilian…

On 5 August, a piece of a derelict SpaceX rocket traveling at 5,400 miles an hour met with the moon and punched a fresh hole into it near Einstein Crater. Astronomers were thrilled. The European Southern Observatory caught sodium and lithium flaring in the debris plume and called it a bonus. The media called it a light show. Nobody was physically hurt, so nobody is responsible, and within a week the story was gone.I have spent 20 years tracking the junk humanity leaves behind in space for a living, and I want to tell you plainly what that crater actually…
