Like snooping in someone else’s supermarket trolley, discovering other people’s shopping habits satisfies a certain nosiness. And never more so than when it comes to celebrities – there’s nothing more human than knowing Kim Cattrall loves fish and chips, or that Henry Holland is a Skims guy.The Guardian’s journalism is independent. Revenue Monitoring Group Lauds Customs For Bold Reforms in Trade, Security, Technology – THISDAYLIVE
The Revenue Monitoring Group of Nigeria (RMGN) has commended the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) for what it described as “a strategic transformation” in trade facilitation, border security and technology adoption under the leadership of Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the civil society organization said the reforms have repositioned Customs beyond revenue collection to become a key driver of national development. Signed by RMGN President, Dr. Ifeanyi Duruaku, and Secretary General, Comrade Tor Lumun, the group noted that NCS had successfully ditched age-long manual processes in favour of digital, intelligence-led operations. “The CGC has…
The Bald Range wildfire comes on the heels of another fire in the Okanagan, called Bradley Creek, which is believed to have destroyed more than 200 homes.Officials said the Bradley Creek fire is now being held after “tireless work” by wildfire crews to contain it. Drought conditions have also contributed to fires in the US state of Washington, just south of British Columbia, where more than 65,000 people were forced to flee their homes. Devastating fires have also burned this summer in Spain and France as Europe grapples with drought and record high temperatures. France has seen its worst fires…

Meta on Monday released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight model designed to power AI agents locally on consumer hardware, providing the clearest picture yet of what CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of “personal superintelligence” could look like in practice. The 30-billion parameter model is essentially an open version of Meta’s most powerful closed model, Muse Spark, which the company debuted in April. Glimmer’s weights are available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, so developers can download them and modify as necessary. Glimmer is designed to run AI agents that can perform multi-step tasks — like call tools, write and debug code, work…
The businessman and Reform UK donor Arron Banks is facing calls to lay out the extent of his surveillance of journalists, described by an industry body as an “attack on our democracy”.The News Media Association (NMA), which represents regional and national media, raised concerns after Banks appeared to admit over the weekend to hiring private investigators to spy on a Sunday Times journalist. The revelation, first reported in the New Statesman, has led to fears that other journalists examining the funding of Reform and Nigel Farage, including those at the Guardian, could have been targeted. When asked over the weekend whether he…
While dogs are known to turn the puppy eyes on their owners, it seems our pets are keeping a close eye on us too: research has revealed dog brains can distinguish different types of unhappy human faces.Dr Laura Cuaya, a co-author of the study from the University of Vienna, said previous behavioural studies had shown dogs could tell apart some human facial expressions, but such studies tended to only test two at a time, one positive and one negative. As a result, it was not clear if dogs could distinguish different types of happy or unhappy faces. Now Cuaya and colleagues…

Despite singing dogs and a chorus of hallucinogenic sheep, Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s The Galloping Cure is not for the faint-hearted. Based on an original story by Karen Russell, itself inspired by Kafka’s A Country Doctor, the opera tells how a charismatic sideshow huckster rids a rural town of pain only to replace it with something far more sinister in a thinly veiled allegory of America’s opioid crisis. It’s a typically confronting slice of music theatre from the creators of Breaking the Waves, their acclaimed adaptation of Lars von Trier’s film. The plot centres on local doctor Theresa Hart and…
