Despite the ever-increasing size and dominance of Netflix, the streamer has continued to struggle with its most obvious aim. While viewers might flock there for smooth-brained dating shows, tawdry true crime, Harlan Coben thrillers and junky romcoms, the platform is yet to be known for creating original movie franchises, the bread and butter of most old-fashioned Hollywood studios, for better or worse. The problem Netflix often faces is that to turn a big-budget bet into a cultural event, it requires more than a low-stakes click at home and a brief weekend’s worth of chatter. On several instances in the past, the people of Bauchi State have demonstrated that there is no room for imposition of candidates on the electorate. In 2007, when former Governor Ahmadu Muazu tried to install the Secretary to State Government, Nadada Umar on the PDP ticket, former governor Isa Yuguda of the defunct ANPP won the election through protest votes. Likewise, in 2015, Isa Yuguda anointed Auwal Jatau on the PDP mandate only to lose to APC’s M. A. Abubakar, also through protest votes. In 2019, the APC’s direct primary elections that preceded the general election were controversial and therefore considered…

Edward Gabkwet South Africa’s recurring xenophobic tendencies and Robert Ludlum’s satirical novel, The Road to Gandolfo, where an eccentric retired General plots to kidnap the Pope for an impractical $1 ransom from each Catholic in the world, share a central premise of weaponized redirection. For more than two decades, South Africa has had to reckon with repeated outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence targeting mainly migrants and refugees from neighbouring nations and other parts of Africa, including Nigeria. It is a fact that at the end of apartheid in 1994, South Africa became a major destination for migrants seeking greener pastures, just…
