The Anambra State Government has inaugurated the 2027 Budget Committee, charging its members to ensure the state’s next appropriation is guided by transparency, fiscal discipline and evidence-based project selection.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Chukwukadibia Okoye, inaugurated the committee on Friday at the Inter-Agency Board Room of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
According to a statement issued after the inauguration, Okoye urged members to approach their assignment with focus, commitment and a strong sense of ownership.
He stressed that the 2027 budget process must be driven by transparency, discipline and integrity, noting that the budget remains the principal tool for translating government policies and programmes into tangible development outcomes.
The commissioner said the process must remain transparent and people-centred, adding that the budget should deliver measurable impact for residents while advancing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development agenda.
“The ministry opted for a physical inauguration to build teamwork and shared ownership. Members are reminded that their selection was merit-based and that they must serve the collective interest of Anambra.
“We urge members to prioritise evidence-based project selection that reflects the genuine needs and aspirations of the people. Projects must be selected on merit and based on their developmental impact.
“Members must prioritise early budget preparation, effective synergy among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, accurate costing and realistic projections as these are essential components of a credible budget process,” he said.
Speaking on key development challenges confronting the state, including erosion, Okoye called for proper planning and the prioritisation of projects capable of addressing the most pressing needs of residents.
He expressed confidence that the committee would produce a people-centred 2027 budget capable of driving sustainable development across the state.
“Key directives to the committee are discipline, integrity and transparency at every stage. Evidence-based projects. No inflation, no duplication. Prioritise completion of ongoing projects.
“Realistic projections, accurate costing, early prep, stronger MDA synergy, grow IGR, attract donor support, and spend prudently, smart prioritisation of critical needs like erosion control,” he added.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Chinyere Nwabachili, presented the 2027 budget calendar, outlining the process from community submissions to legislative approval.
The ministry also pledged its full support to the committee, saying the objective was to produce a budget that reflects the needs and aspirations of the people of Anambra State.
