… Says Shekwolo’s comments could trigger violence
Okai Austin, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has urged Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to caution Samuel Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council, over alleged divisive remarks capable of escalating political tensions in the area.
Okai, a human rights activist, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, following a viral video in which Shekwolo was allegedly heard threatening to track down and attack critics on social media.
Shekwolo was also accused of warning residents who do not support the All Progressives Congress (APC) to leave the area council.
Describing the remarks as “uncalled for” and dangerous, Okai warned that such utterances could inflame political tensions and trigger violence.

“The Federal Capital Territory is home to all Nigerians, as well as the international community. We must not allow anyone to escalate tensions,” he said.
Okai urged Shekwolo to exercise restraint and embrace tolerance, inclusiveness and dialogue, regardless of residents’ political affiliations.
He said public officials, particularly grassroots leaders, must demonstrate responsibility and avoid statements capable of dividing their communities.
The ADC chieftain also appealed to Wike and other relevant authorities to review the alleged comments and intervene before the situation escalates.
He urged Shekwolo to emulate leaders committed to peaceful political engagement, citing Senator Philip Aduda, a former lawmaker who represented the FCT, as an example.
Okai stressed that political differences must not be allowed to undermine peaceful coexistence in the FCT.
