IstanbulInspired by Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient ExpressI visited Istanbul because of Murder on the Orient Express, even though the city only makes a fleeting appearance in the novel. In fact, one of the things I love about Agatha Christie is that she doesn’t fart about with long descriptions of place. Part of the charm of her detective novels is that they are welterweights, all knotty muscle and six-packs, feinting one way then smacking you in the chops with an unexpected revelation. An extra stone of description would kill that energy. And it’s possible to read Murder on the Orient Express…
The United States of America has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only credible basis for resolving the decades-long territorial dispute. According to a statement issued on Friday by the Royal Office of Morocco, the position was conveyed by U.S. President Donald Trump in a message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day. In the message, Trump said Washington remained firm in its position on the disputed territory. “The United States is unequivocal: We recognise Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and support Morocco’s…
The government’s housebuilding agenda is hitting the stark reality of a lack of water and crumbling infrastructure across the east and south-east of England.Half the country was declared to be in serious drought this week, for the second consecutive year, with the Environment Agency warning of dire consequences for the economy, environment and wildlife. The parts of England in extreme water stress with residents under hosepipe bans are also where the government’s “build, baby, build” agenda is being targeted. Labour has promised to build 1.5m homes by the end of this parliament – a strategy retained by Andy Burnham.Environmental pressures are…
First HoldCo has shifted to a liberal dividend policy that seeks to distribute at least 60 per cent of its annual post-tax profit as dividends. The board of directors of the bank holding company adopted the policy at a meeting on Tuesday, the group stated in a regulatory filing on Thursday, underscoring its resolve to prioritise shareholder returns over retaining most of its profits in the business to drive growth. First HoldCo said the move highlights its directors’ confidence in its earnings capacity, enhanced capital position, improving asset quality, diversified revenue streams, and robust outlook for sustained profitability and growth.…
“Sometimes books tell you more than the content,” says Tim White, as he lines up carefully dust-jacketed books and pamphlets in plastic sleeves on temporary shelves in Melbourne University’s Wilson Hall. He’s preparing his stall for this weekend’s Melbourne Rare Book Fair. For people like White, who runs independent bookshop Books for Cooks, the book as a physical object is just as important as what’s inside it.“We’re interested in where food and society connect … So we just keep pushing the boundaries, looking for things that show unusual aspects of that, things that tell us a bit more about what it…
Greater support for local media is needed to hold mayors and councils to account under Andy Burnham’s plans for devolution, which would involve a massive transfer of power into local government, publishers have said.A range of figures involved with local news broadly welcomed new plans unveiled by the prime minister, but said that monetising content, barriers erected by populist politicians and the roles of big tech and the BBC were among the challenges they faced.Theo Bamber, the chief executive of the News Media Association, the trade body representing UK national, regional and local news publishers, said that any moves to…
Eating one avocado each day may modestly reduce heart disease risk in adults with obesity, according to new research led by scientists in the Penn State Department of Nutritional Sciences. The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. The researchers found that daily avocado consumption was linked to a lower concentration of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the blood. These particles carry cholesterol throughout the body. The size of the reduction was associated with an estimated 4% decrease in heart disease risk. “If people want to improve the quality of their diet, making one small change might be…
There is a popular adage which says that one should “make hay while the sun shines”. It simply means that you should make good use of a good a chance or time that you have before it is too late because it will not last forever. In sports, administrators and athletes alike should know the importance of long preparation as against the usual last minute rush which we refer to as ‘fire brigade’ approach in our clime. The preparation for a major competition like the Olympic and Commonwealth Games is a mixture of physical conditioning, skill drills, mental focus with…
