Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has visited communities affected by deadly attacks in Plateau State, telling grieving families that there are “no easy answers” to the violence. Mr Welby visited victims and families in Jos and Bassa local government areas on Tuesday as part of his engagement with religious leaders and communities affected by years of violence in the state. At Angwan Rukuba in Jos, families who lost loved ones during the 29 March Palm Sunday attacks, which claimed more than 30 lives, recounted their losses to the former archbishop. A bereaved mother, Favour Ayuba, said she had continued…

Kingsley Moghalu, a former presidential candidate, has rejected his nomination into the presidential campaign council of Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the 2027 general election. Mr Moghalu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said he was rejecting the nomination because he had quit partisan politics and no longer represents any political party. He announced his decision in a statement on Thursday, shortly after Phrank Shaibu, a senior special assistant on public communication to Atiku, announced the composition of the campaign council. Atiku had nominated Mr Moghalu, a professor of practice in…

Some in Labour’s ranks believe Burnham is planning for an early election, with party HQ recently launching “operation second term”, to beef up its campaigning and organising strength.Burnham does not have to call an election until August 2029 – but going to the country early – perhaps as early as next spring – could deliver him a mandate of his own and free him from the constraints of Sir Keir Starmer’s 2024 manifesto.Recent polling has suggested that a “Burnham bounce” is real, though not dramatic. The party has moved from just under 20% in the polls at the end of…

She argued there were too many “unknowns” about the impacts of concentrations of PCBs on the body and no treatment for those found to have elevated levels in their blood.”All we could do is give [people] a number that we can’t really interpret and then we can’t make right.”She felt this could “create even more worry and that is a health harm in itself”.”There is nothing that blood testing can do that would magically take those worries away – it would only potentially magnify them,” Jones said.Asked whether the cost of implementing a blood testing regime was also a factor,…

Belgian buns are among a dying breed of bakes, forgotten about in favour of pretty cinnamon and cardamom buns and creative laminated doughs. I’d love to see more of these old-school, classic treats in bakeries, not least because they’re really simple to make. There are no twists or extra frills, just soft, buttery dough swirled with lemon curd and juicy sultanas. The icing glaze and cherry on top are essential, though, for maximum eating pleasure.Belgian bunsPrep 5 minProve 2 hr 30 min+Cook 1 hr 15 minMakes 8320g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting40g caster sugar1½ tsp instant yeast¼…

Dozens of patients have filed lawsuits in the United States against the makers of popular GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, alleging that the medicines caused a rare form of sudden vision loss. GLP-1 drugs are mainly used to treat type 2 diabetes, while some are also approved for chronic weight management. The lawsuits concern non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition that occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced and can result in sudden, usually painless and permanent vision loss, ABC News reported on Tuesday. The patients allege that the drugmakers did not adequately…

Researchers led by Prof. An Xu at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have found that a magnetotactic bacterium (MTB) called Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 (AMB-1) can extend healthy lifespan in the Caenorhabditis elegans model. The team also identified the main mechanism behind the effect — suppression of a form of cell death known as ferroptosis. The findings were published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine. Magnetic Bacteria and Healthy Aging Aging gradually reduces normal physiological function and raises the risk of many chronic diseases. Researchers have explored drugs and genetic approaches as possible anti-aging…
