While Londoners scurried from building to building seeking shade on another baking hot day this week, one man paused in the shadow of the Royal Courts of Justice. The leader of Oxfordshire county council, Tim Bearder, was not only happy in the shade of the court’s gothic towers. He had just won a landmark legal victory. On the face of it, the case was an argument about local council permissions. But such is the febrile nature of British politics, the proceedings took on a whole new importance – one which strikes to the heart of raging debate in England over its most…
A supernova threatens a civilisation in Claire North’s Slow GodsShutterstock/Martin Capek When I decided to write a space opera, I wanted to start with a supernova. There is no force in the universe like it, either in scale or destructive power – but though it is irrefutably dramatic, it’s also something you can see coming. As a writer, I find this fascinating. What does it mean to look into the heavens and know the exact date when a star will die and with it, your world? What choices do you make, and what price would you pay to save yourself…

Higher education can incorporate some elements from music education to make learning more effective. | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStockPhoto Every serious music student has spent time in a practice room that felt less like a room and more like a mirror. A phrase is played, it falls short, and it is played again. The teacher stops the student mid-bar, not to discourage, but because the error has a name and naming it is the first act of repair. This exchange has been quietly repeated across music classrooms for centuries, holding a lesson that higher education is still in the process of…
