It was the first day of spring this year. I was topless, face-down on a foldaway travel table, as the masseuse uttered six words that brought my attempt at relaxation to an abrupt end: “I think your arm is haunted.”I have broken my right arm seven times: seven breaks on seven separate occasions. Some years, my arm was in a sling more than it was out of one. After losing roughly $1 trillion in market value in less than two months, Nvidia Corp.’s stock is the cheapest it’s been since before the AI boom kicked off and sent the shares into the stratosphere.

The days of Nvidia’s unparalleled market dominance aren’t over, but challengers and choices are arising from all directions. ZML, a hot French AI startup endorsed by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, has released inference-performance software that allows a variety of open-source large language models to run on a variety of chips — including Nvidia’s, AMD’s, Google’s TPU, Apple Metal and Intel Arc. With ZML/LLMD, the newly launched LLM inference server, the company’s ambition is to break existing silos and make different chips available for AI use cases at their maximum available speed, and sometimes faster, ZML founder Steeve Morin told…

CATL’s sodium-ion battery on display at a trade showVCG/VCG via Getty Images On 5 February, a black sedan was speeding down an icy track in northern China at 95 kilometres per hour when its tyre burst, releasing a puff of white into the -32°C air. The car coasted to a stop without spinning into the snow. This was meant to demonstrate that even the harshest conditions were no barrier to the auto-maker Changan’s new line of electric vehicles, which includes the first mass-produced EV with a sodium-ion battery. Changan’s Nevo AO6 model is expected to hit the market later this…

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in a fiercely contested FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match in Vancouver. Both teams displayed tactical discipline, physical resilience and defensive organisation, refusing to take unnecessary risks with a quarter-final place at stake. Colombia started brightly, dominating possession and moving the ball quickly through midfield while looking to exploit Switzerland with swift counter-attacks. The South Americans pressed aggressively, won second balls and disrupted Switzerland’s passing rhythm throughout much of the opening half. Their attackers stretched the Swiss defence with intelligent movement, while the wingers repeatedly threatened down both…
