The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja. In a short ruling, Judge Mohammed Umar ordered Mr Sowore to be held in the correctional centre pending the hearing and determination of his motion to stay the order revoking his bail and bench warrant. The judge also dismissed Mr Sowore’s earlier application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on the grounds of alleged bias. The judge then adjourned the matter until Wednesday (24 June) for hearing of the application for stay.…
In South Sudan, women’s bodies have long functioned as battlefields. Through civil war, intercommunal violence and localised conflicts, state and non-state actors have repeatedly used sexual violence to terrorise civilians – especially women and girls. Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in South Sudan is much more than a humanitarian issue. It exposes deep protection failures by the state and international peacekeeping and accountability frameworks meant to safeguard civilians. Recent Institute for Security Studies fieldwork suggests that the violence is evolving beyond traditional conflict settings. Sources described an increase in attacks by youth gangs, largely in the capital Juba, who rape and…

Egypt’s private sector cut jobs at the fastest pace in nearly six years in May, highlighting growing strains on businesses despite the country’s official unemployment rate falling to a record low earlier this year. Companies shed workers at the quickest pace since June 2020 as soaring operating costs, fuelled partly by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, squeezed margins and dampened business activity, according to the latest S&P Global Egypt Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The deterioration in private-sector employment comes a few weeks after the Arab nation’s unemployment rate fell to six percent in the first quarter of this…

It’s tempting to think of Toy Story as just another successful Pixar animated franchise, especially now that its fifth installment has just arrived in theaters. But one could actually argue that Pixar’s entire journey — from a computer animation startup to the box-office juggernaut behind originals like Inside Out, Cars, and The Incredibles — is best understood through its beloved animated films about toys that come to life whenever humans leave the room. For one thing, Toy Story has accomplished something no other Pixar franchise has managed. It’s remained a major theatrical event across three decades — the 1990s, 2010s, and…
Every year on 19 June, the world marks World Sickle Cell Day to raise awareness about a condition affecting millions globally. Yet despite decades of public campaigns encouraging genotype testing and informed marriage decisions, Nigeria continues to record one of the highest burdens of sickle cell disease (SCD) in the world. According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the country records approximately 150,000 infants born with sickle cell disease annually, accounting for a significant share of the global burden. While genotype awareness campaigns have become common in schools, churches, mosques and healthcare facilities, health experts say awareness…
Last week, the Nigerian stock market witnessed one of its sharpest declines so far this year, depreciating by 3.6 per cent as sell-offs in bank stocks hammered the benchmark equity index. That was not unexpected, as analysts have recently projected stocks to experience price correction, having stayed in the uptrend territory for quite a while. “Investors are likely to continue to take advantage of recent price corrections to accumulate fundamentally sound stocks, particularly counters with strong earnings prospects and attractive valuations,” analysts at Meristem Securities said in their outlook for the week. Looking forward, increased positioning in stocks that pay…
