Omolabake Fasogbon A Facebook group had recently posted a toothpaste brand on the platform to seek public reviews. What followed was mixed reactions. Several users expressed dissatisfaction with the product, with many dismissing the brand’s claims but still bought it because of the free toothbrush bundled with it. Some of the comments accompanying the posts read: “I buy it because it’s cheap and comes with a free toothbrush; It doesn’t whiten teeth; I think people buy it because of the toothbrush and It’s affordable.” Consumers’ love for freebies dates back to time immemorial, and the reasons are not far-fetched: Nigerians,…
OpenAI launched its first piece of hardware last week — a fancy little keypad built to pair with ChatGPT. Micro, which was developed in collaboration with specialty keyboard designer Work Louder, is essentially an artisanal workplace novelty that many tech enthusiasts will love and that may leave everyone else a little puzzled. OpenAI’s entrance into the hardware market hasn’t arrived without drama. Several weeks ago, Apple sued the AI lab and accused it of trade theft — kicking off what’s certain to be a long-simmering legal battle. Meanwhile, news of another smart home product in development at OpenAI has also…

Norwegian director Vegard Dahle’s zombie comedy “Grandmonster” has won the top Outpost Award, and a prize of post-production services, at the Fantasia Festival’s prestigious Frontières Co-Production Market, which handed out six awards at its closing cocktail, July 25. The film, about an American dropout who unintentionally triggers a zombie outbreak at a remote Norwegian nursing home while trying to save her grandmother from dementia, was presented with deadpan, self-deprecating humor by Dahle and producer Jon Vatne, who wore matching sweaters, at a day-long Frontières pitching event on July 22. The project, one of the 20 titles in Frontières official selection,…
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised concerns over the state of child protection in Nigeria, revealing that six in 10 children experience some form of abuse, while only two in five children under the age of five have their births registered. The agency also disclosed that two in five young women in Nigeria were married before the age of 18, a situation it said continues to expose millions of children to abuse, exploitation and exclusion from essential services. UNICEF Nigeria’s Chief of Child Protection, Natalie McCauley, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday during the Child Protection Mid-Year Review…
