Southern Africa has taken another step toward deeper financial integration after the regional cross-border payments system added the Angolan kwanza as a settlement currency, with plans to include more African currencies as trade within the region expands. The Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system formally added the kwanza on Monday, marking the first new settlement currency to join the platform since its launch in 2013. Operated by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), the system processed about $3.77 billion in trade and interbank transactions across the region in 2025. The expansion for Africa’s biggest economy is…
AI note-taking app Granola is launching an app for the Apple Watch in hopes that its users will want to record meetings and take notes without using their smartphones. Users can set the Granola app as one of the watch faces to start transcribing at any time. A senior judge has accused the Home Office of relying on “AI hallucinated” information to refuse an asylum claim. The case relates to a Moroccan woman and her child who fled her country after experiencing forced underage marriage and extreme violence, including rape. The woman claimed asylum on the basis of fears that she would be killed by her husband: a powerful, previously convicted criminal. The Home Office refused her case, citing evidence from a supposedly independent and authoritative document known as a country policy information note (CPIN), which they said confirmed that Morocco would be safe for her.But the document could…

The cut by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) agency comes while construction of a new super radio telescope in South Africa and Australia called the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is underway. It is set to start gathering data in five years, and by failing to back Jodrell Bank, the…

How would you feel if your neighbourhood lamp-posts could recognise your number plate, and also your face? Maybe you wouldn’t mind, given how long we’ve had automatic number plate recognition and CCTV. This is what Conflow Power Group (CPG) in Warwickshire claims for its iLamps, the first of their kind in the UK.What if lamp-posts had the potential to incorporate new AI capability – gait analysis, suspicious behaviours – that you…
