Gifted actress Titilola Ajayi has opened up about her experience featuring in King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, a historical epic that brings together some of Nollywood’s most respected actors.
Ajayi plays Kosoko’s wife, a character whose relationship with the historical figure forms part of the personal conflict between Kosoko and the powerful kingmaker, Eletu Odibo.
Describing the experience as memorable, Ajayi said working alongside established actors challenged her to bring her best to the production.
“Being part of King Kosoko was a huge honour for me. It was an incredible experience working alongside actors I have admired for so long. Sharing the set with them challenged me to bring my best to the role and reminded me of the importance of learning from people who have been in the industry for many years,” she said.
Speaking about her character, she said, “She is connected to a very important part of Kosoko’s story, so I had to approach the character with a sense of responsibility. It was not just about playing a wife; it was about understanding the circumstances, emotions and choices surrounding her. I wanted to connect with the character and give the audience a performance that felt believable within the story.”
The film also gave Ajayi the opportunity to work with veterans including the late Sir Taiwo Hassan, aka Ogogo, Dele Odule, Jide Kosoko, Femi Branch, Yinka Quadri, Yemi Blaq, Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo and Faithia Balogun, among others.
“Working with Sir Taiwo Hassan, aka Ogogo, was special. He was a respected actor and being part of the same project with him is something I will always cherish,” she said.
Directed by Adebayo Tijani, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos explores the power struggles and rivalries surrounding 19th-century Lagos.
