When Morgan Mary DeBrincat received a rose on Hinge from Sydney Marie Davis in November 2021, it took her nearly two weeks to respond. At the time, DeBrincat had just started swiping on women, so she was hesitant to reply.
“I was a little nervous when I found out Morgan had never dated a woman before and that I was her first,” Davis said. “But being with her felt so natural, so I was willing to see it through.”
The first date for the couple, who were living in Austin, Texas, was completely unplanned. After chatting for two weeks on Hinge, Davis messaged DeBrincat that she was thinking about calling out of work for the day because it was the first birthday of her older brother, Kellen, since his death in March 2021.
DeBrincat was working from home and invited Davis to come by if she didn’t want to be alone. She was pleasantly surprised when Davis accepted the offer.
“I still remember how nervous I was walking down to meet her at the elevator,” DeBrincat said. “I wasn’t publicly out at that point, and Sydney was the first woman I had ever really talked to in this way, so there were a lot of emotions and nerves wrapped up in that moment. But the second we met in person, all of that immediately disappeared. Despite everything she was carrying emotionally that day, she was incredibly warm, kind, and easy to be around.”
What DeBrincat thought would be an hour or two of keeping each other company stretched into an entire day and then well into the night.
“Looking back now, there was something really meaningful about the way our relationship started,” DeBrincat said. “It wasn’t built around some perfectly planned first date or grand gesture. It started with vulnerability, comfort, and simply being there for each other, which in many ways still defines our relationship today.”

DeBrincat, 30, who grew up in Northville, Mich., is a senior creative director at the apparel company OluKai, in Orange County, Calif. She earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Michigan State University.
Davis, 31, grew up in Houston and holds a bachelor’s degree in corporate communications from the University of Texas at Austin. She works remotely as a principal recruiter at Omni Analytics, which is based in San Francisco.
In June 2023, after dating for a year, DeBrincat and Davis moved into a new apartment in Austin. A year later, DeBrincat accepted a job in Bozeman, Mont., where the couple has been living since August 2024.
In February 2025, DeBrincat proposed to Davis while celebrating Davis’s 30th birthday at the Sage Lodge in Pray, Mont.
“One of the funny things about our relationship is that Syd asked me to be her girlfriend first, so from that point on it became an ongoing joke between us about who would end up proposing first,” DeBrincat said. “Even though we joked about it constantly, I always knew I wanted to be the one to ask her.”
During a trip to Austin in October 2025, Davis proposed to DeBrincat on a bridge overlooking the city, as a wedding photographer she hired captured the moment. Afterward, they headed to Nido for dinner, where their closest friends were waiting to celebrate.
“I knew I wanted to propose in Austin, the place where we first met in 2021,” Davis said. “It felt especially meaningful to bring such an important moment back to where our story began.”
The couple married Aug. 8 at the Inn at Bay Harbor in Bay Harbor, Mich., by their friend, Paria Sheshpari, who was ordained by American Marriage Ministries for the occasion.
They were surrounded by 130 family members and friends who shared a public vow to support the couple through their journey. “Our wedding was less about strict traditions and more about creating a weekend that genuinely felt like us,” DeBrincat said. “We wanted the entire celebration to feel warm, immersive, and deeply personal to both our relationship and the people we love.”
The wedding featured thoughtful touches throughout the ceremony and reception, from live performances by an electric harpist and saxophonist to a half-hour fireworks display. The most personal detail, though, was the handwritten letter they prepared for each guest, offering an individual note of gratitude to everyone who had come to celebrate with them.
With travel and adventure at the core of their relationship, the couple plans to move to Orange County, Calif., at the end of August for work.
“California is a brand-new chapter, and we know it will come with its own highs and lows,” Davis said. “But if moving to Montana taught us anything, it’s that as long as we’re together, we’ll make the most of every moment.”
