WAFCON: Super Falcons fall to Cameroon, face South Africa for World Cup playoff spot
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been knocked out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon in a fiercely contested encounter in Casablanca on Sunday.
The loss ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the defending champions now forced into a playoff route to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
The Super Falcons will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana for a place in the intercontinental playoff, which offers another opportunity to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Cameroon end Nigeria’s title defence
Nigeria entered the quarter-final as one of the tournament favourites after recovering from a shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening Group C match with victories over Zambia and Egypt.
Justin Madugu’s side had demolished Egypt 6-2 in their final group game, raising expectations that the defending champions could go deep into the competition.
However, Cameroon produced a disciplined defensive performance to frustrate the Falcons and secure their place in the semi-finals.
The result also guarantees the Indomitable Lionesses a top-four finish and an automatic place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Falcons dominate but fail to score
Madugu made three changes to the team that defeated Egypt, with Gift Monday replacing the injured Asisat Oshoala, while Jennifer Echegini and Tosin Demehin returned to the starting XI after serving suspensions.
Nigeria dominated possession and spent long periods camped inside Cameroon’s half but struggled to turn their territorial advantage into goals.
Madugu attempted to change the course of the contest, introducing Uchenna Kanu in the 38th minute for Rinsola Babajide.
The coach later turned to Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Oshoala as Nigeria searched for an equaliser.
Despite sustained pressure and repeated attacking waves deep into stoppage time, the Falcons could not find a breakthrough.
Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was particularly impressive, producing several important saves to preserve her side’s advantage and earning the Woman of the Match award.
World Cup hopes now rest on playoff
The defeat means Nigeria must now navigate the CAF World Cup playoff route if they are to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons will meet South Africa in a crucial playoff clash later this week, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff for a place at the World Cup finals in Brazil.
