Nigeria’s remarkable run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued on Wednesday as Goodness Nwachukwu claimed the country’s seventh gold medal with a new world record in the women’s para discus F42-44/61-64 event.
Nwachukwu threw 39.66 metres to secure the gold medal, setting a new world record and further strengthening Nigeria’s reputation as a leading force in para sports.
The latest feat adds another golden chapter to Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign, which has already produced several record-breaking performances across para powerlifting, weightlifting and athletics.
The victory also marks a successful title defence for Nwachukwu, who first announced herself on the Commonwealth stage at the Birmingham 2022 Games, where she delivered one of the standout performances of the competition by breaking her own world record twice on her way to winning gold in the same event.
Nwachukwu’s success increases Nigeria’s gold medal tally to seven, extending what has been one of the country’s strongest Commonwealth Games outings in recent years.
Earlier in the Games, Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris delivered gold medals in para powerlifting, while Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal dominated the weightlifting events with a series of Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records.
Nigeria has also enjoyed success on the athletics track, with Kayinsola Ajayi winning bronze in the men’s 100 metres, becoming the first Nigerian man to claim a Commonwealth Games medal in the event since Olusoji Fasuba’s silver at Melbourne 2006. Temitope Adeshina also secured bronze in the women’s high jump.
With more medal events still to come, Team Nigeria will be hoping to build on its growing tally as the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enter their final stages.
