The US military has contributed to ecosystem destruction, biodiversity loss, and population-level declines of many species (1–3). Its activities have polluted drinking water, contaminated local fisheries (4–6), and negatively affected the health and well-being of many communities worldwide (3, 5–7). One estimate suggests that the pollution produced by the US military-industrial complex is equivalent to that of approximately 140 countries (8).
